The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has demanded the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, the accused in the brutal rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The case, which has caused widespread outrage in Bengal since August, is nearing its conclusion, with arguments from the prosecution ending on Thursday.
During the hearing in the Additional District Judge (ADJ) court in Sealdah, the CBI lawyer outlined the evidence against Sanjay Roy. The trial, conducted in a closed-door courtroom, saw the prosecution present biological and forensic evidence linking the accused to the heinous crime.
Key pieces of evidence included DNA analysis, which confirmed that saliva found on the victim's body matched Sanjay Roy’s genetic profile. Additionally, bloodstains on the accused’s clothes and shoes were confirmed to belong to the victim through forensic testing. The CBI also cited a report from its team of experts, which unanimously identified Sanjay Roy as the sole perpetrator.
The prosecution presented testimonies from 54 witnesses, highlighting details that pointed unequivocally towards Roy's culpability. The CBI lawyer emphasized the brutal nature of the crime and called for the harshest punishment, arguing that this rare and shocking incident warranted the death penalty.
Sanjay Roy, who has been in custody since his arrest, appeared in court for the proceedings. His defense lawyer is expected to present arguments on January 4, as per the court’s directive. The trial has gripped the state, with demands for justice growing louder.
The victim, a doctor at RG Kar Hospital, was brutally assaulted and murdered, leading to an uproar across Bengal. The CBI took over the investigation following demands for a thorough and impartial probe. The court’s verdict, expected soon, will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent in cases of such brutality.
